As patients near the end of their lives, Community hospice nurses have the opportunity to walk alongside them to maximize their comfort and quality.

If you ask our nurses, they will tell you that there is great honor in developing one-on-one relationships with patients and families as they contend with a terminal illness and prepare for their final days.

Being able to positively impact a patient’s life is a privilege – even more so for nurses who care for patients nearing the end of their lives.

Hospice RNs are compassionate and true. They have the ability to work in diverse settings, cultures, and socioeconomic environments. They perform well independently, and their pain and symptom management skills are remarkable.

With an average caseload of 10-12 patients, our hospice nurses may work 8-hour weekdays or weekends. They may also be on call through the week.

Hospice nurses work with a multi-disciplinary team that includes social workers, chaplains, the hospice medical director, and others.

Using a variety of equipment individual to each patient’s illness, the diagnoses they manage include cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and pulmonary conditions.

Exceptional Hospice Care Experiences

A patient was experiencing uncontrolled physical symptoms while the family was experiencing emotional distress. A team of nurses and the Hospice Medical Director spent the entire day at the patient’s home, resulting in comfort for the patient and alleviating the family’s fears.

A patient wanted to get married prior to death. The Hospice Team helped arrange a wedding in the home, providing flowers and cake. The patient and his “new wife” were able to complete that goal and spend quality time together.

Patients approaching the end of life have fears related to being in pain and/or being left alone. Hospice enables people to stay in their home with their loved ones while receiving professional management of their pain and symptoms.
